Cultural heritage is our shared wealth and a social cohesion tool for local communities and society in general. However, more and more, many historical landmarks and cultural landscapes are at risk of being forever lost due to natural disasters or due to climate change combined with human activity such as excessive tourism.
3D scanning allows scientists to create digital twins of important monuments and artefacts – which can then be documented, distributed and examined by teams of architects, historians and scientists around the world.
The 3D documentation field is new and scientists are developing new methods and outputs that have the potential to engage the creative ecosystem of culture and develop brand new, immersive augmented reality experiences.
The future of 3D representations of cultural heritage is bright and will create many immersive experiences. They can also play a vital role in the protection of material culture and the historical and cultural landscapes that need to be preserved.
In this Thematic Exhibition you will find few, but interesting 3D representations of archaeological objects and monuments such as the temple of Apollo in Delphi and the palace of Knossos in Crete. As the new technology becomes more widespread, the available collection of 3D models will increase and it will populate projects, products and services for education, creativity, gaming, cultural tourism and innovation.
